Siberia is a unique natural entity, having no equal worldwide as regards its size, ultra-continental climatic conditions, extremely low population density, including aboriginal ethnoses, as well as its immense natural resources. Such a combination of natural, social and economic conditions lends an unprecedented aspect to the scenery of this region that might be still scantily known to the international reader. This book presents the results from geographical studies of Siberia. Its sections outline the uniqueness of this giant region characterized by ultracontinental climatic conditions, high biodiversity, the preservation of cultures of the indigenous peoples, and by a world level of natural resource potential.

Over the past five decades, the scientists of the V.B. Sochava Institute of Geography SB RAS have been engaged with the study of the natural phenomenon. Their research builds on a state-of-science theoretical foundation, the doctrine of geosystems, and on high-technology investigation methods. In the volume, emphasis is given to the advancement of cartographic representation using GIS technologies and remotely sensed data.

The book is intended primarily for the international reader, specialist geographers, economists, policy-makers, as well as for all those, who are seeking for a new knowledge of the world surrounding us.
